If necessary, Dr. Matthew Olmsted may implement a two-phase orthodontic treatment plan. As the name implies, two-phase orthodontic treatment consists of two stages of treatments. Our orthodontist recommends that both of these stages begin as soon as possible, as putting off treatment can result in a need for more advanced, invasive procedures later, which may not be as effective as the original two-phase treatment would have been.
Phase One treatment is designed to help the upper and lower jaw fit together better so as to accommodate all of your permanent teeth. Children often exhibit signs of jaw problems as they grow and develop, so it is important to give careful attention and care around ages 6-7 in order to prevent future problems. Our orthodontist is adept at providing the proper treatment that will allow your child’s jaws and teeth to develop correctly, avoiding the need for tooth extractions and more complex surgical procedures later on. During an initial evaluation, we will determine if early treatment is needed, and if so, when it should begin.
Before the second phase begins, there is an in-between resting period. During this phase, our orthodontist will keep an eye on the teeth to ensure everything develops properly and that there is enough room for the permanent teeth to come in.
During Phase Two, our orthodontist will carefully examine your child’s teeth and jaws and provide treatments necessary to ensure that each tooth is in the right location and in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. He will also ensure that the jaws are properly aligned. Phase Two typically utilizes orthodontic treatment, such as wearing full upper and lower braces.
