Orthodontics for Adults

Orthodontics for adults includes a wide range of braces and corrective procedures to help straighten the teeth, improve overcrowding of the teeth, fix bite issues and adjust the angle of the jaw. Not only does orthodontics provide aesthetic improvements in the patient’s smile, but their bite is improved and they no longer experience discomfort as a result of the angle of their teeth or alignment of their jaw. Here are the orthodontic options for adults.

Traditional Braces

The most common type of braces to be worn be adults and adolescents are traditional braces. These are metal braces that have brackets over the teeth and wires that go between the brackets, and can be tightened by the orthodontist. They are not removable, and the wires are the only part of the braces that get adjusted until it is time to remove the braces completely. Traditional metal braces are also the least expensive and the best option for more advanced issues with the bite or the teeth alignment.

Clear Braces

The next type of braces for adults are clear braces, made from ceramic. As opposed to the metal brackets, the teeth have ceramic braces over them. These aren’t completely invisible, though much less visible than metal braces. They are usually only worn by adults (or teens) who don’t want the shiny metal look of traditional braces. Because they aren’t as prominent, orthodontists urge their patients to take even better care of their oral hygiene on these braces than metal ones. Ceramic is not as stable as metal, so they need more maintenance.

Lingual Braces

For adults who want to have the least noticeable braces possible, they can choose lingual braces. These are known as invisible braces because nobody else can see them in most cases. Lingual braces fit on the insides (the back) of the teeth instead of the front. They cannot be worn by every patient needing braces, because some teeth are too small or irregularly shaped to fit the metal on the back of the teeth. However, they are ideal for athletes, celebrities, models and anyone who doesn’t want others knowing about their teeth, but still want to improve their teeth and their smile.

Invisalign is also available, which uses clear, plastic aligners to straighten the teeth. These aligners are made from acrylic and are mostly invisible, except when seen up close. Not only are they invisible, but also removable. They have the ability to straighten the teeth just as well as regular braces, but they can be removed while brushing or flossing the teeth, and while eating or drinking during meals. Adults often choose Invisalign for the comfort and the aesthetic factor. Adults with mild or moderate bite or teeth issues can get Invisalign.

Adults have a variety of options when it comes to orthodontics, ranging from clear and traditional braces, to plastic aligners by getting Invisalign. For most people, they will wear braces for 1-2 years, though some need them for up to four years, especially if they have severe overbites or underbites.
